Chorister Outreach Programme

Leicester Cathedral is hosting a Chorister Outreach Programme as part of the Government initiative to get all boys and girls to sing regularly in schools.

Our Choral animateurs visit primary schools, taking a weekly singing experience for one term. As well as singing in schools, interested children are invited to the Cathedral to perform and to watch the Cathedral Choristers in rehearsal and performance. They see and experience the Cathedral, hear the magnificent Cathedral Organ and take part in a Workshop.

There is also a Training Choir that meets on Saturday mornings 9.30-10.15 in the Cathedral Song School and all boys and girls are welcome to sing, or simply to come and watch with parents.

Former Director of Music, Jonathan Gregory, says “It is exciting to have this project in Leicester Cathedral, the only Cathedral in the East Midlands participating in the scheme so far”. Our animateur has taken singing groups with hundreds of children in different schools. Our first performance was a great success and we look forward to future workshops.

Opportunities for boys and girls who become Choristers are enormous : they gain in confidence, reading skills, social abilities and take part as a team, concentration increases as they focus inperformance and they have fun. Tuition is free.
