Bishop TimThe work of Tim our Bishop

The Right Reverend Timothy Stevens

Bishop Tim Stevens is the sixth Bishop of Leicester, appointed in June 1999 to a diocese with a diverse mix of urban and rural communities. Prior to taking up this role, Bishop Tim had worked in the Diocese of Chelmsford as a parish priest and Archdeacon, and in the Diocese of St Edmundsbury and Ipswich as the Bishop of Dunwich.

As Diocesan Bishop, Bishop Tim is the chief pastor of the diocese, and has charge of over 327 churches, located in 237 parishes, with just under 200 clergy under his care.

The City of Leicester has the largest Hindu population in the United Kingdom as well as substantial Muslim, Sikh and other faith communities.  Both at diocesan and at national level the Bishop is involved in conversations with those of other faiths, especially in finding ways of working with other faiths on regeneration issues in cities.

In the wider Church, Bishop Tim is a member of the Archbishops Council, and House of Bishops Standing Committee, and is the Convenor of the Lords Spiritual, a coordinating and representational role for those Bishops sitting in the House of Lords. His other interests include work with children and education. In September 2010 he will stand down as the Chairman of the Trustees of The Children's Society, a position he has held for six years. He is a Governor of De Montfort University in Leicester, and is also the Chair of the Council of Westcott House Theological College in Cambridge.
